Don Frowns At Universities Students' To Be Vigillant About Future
The Students of Universities in Lagos have been admonished to take cognizance of the future which is the yardstick of better life attainment.
A lecturer in the department of Accounting, Lagos State University, Dr.Jamiu Olamilekan Tijani gave this admonition at a programme organised by Nigerian Universities Accounting Students' Association(NUASA-LASU), with the theme "Accounting & Business Conduct(ABC.5.0) held at Modern Hallowed Chamber, Student's Union Arcade, LASU , Ojo Campus.
Dr. Tijani said there is need for students to get themselves acquainted with the ethics of Accounting profession which will in no doubt guide their conducts in school and after graduation noting that attaining good grades in their academics will aswell set the pace for them in the accounting profession.
"Know the gap between what the future holds for you and what you hold for the future" in order to be successful in life for the betterment of an individual in particular and the society in general", Dr. Tijani said.
The first speaker,Mrs Oyindamola Akanbi while speaking on the topic "Unleashing a path to financial leadership in a non-accounting sector said the evolution of accounting to finance has tremendously improve socio-economic activities in the society adding that accounting has taken the leadership roles among others.
According to her " accounting evolved dealings are:
1.Multiple financial scandals e.g. Enron, Cadbury.
2. A need for finance to take a driving seat.
3. Companies wanted less surprises,they wanted some prediction.
4. Finance is the heartbeat of any business. It tells story of the past and can help predict one's future", she enumerated.
Akanbi emphasised that qualities required to make it to leadership include integrity, speaking with power,grit/resilience,hard work, problem solving/critical thinking, collaboration, influence,quick learner/continuous learning, confidence,excellence, opening to new challenges and seeking mentorship noting the critical skills required to make it to leadership which include business acumen, communication/story telling, presentation skills, forecasting)budgeting, strategic planning, analytical skills, leadership, networking, understanding of macroeconomics and technical accounting and Excel(financial modelling).
Citing "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right-Henry Ford"
The second speaker, Mr Ajibola Jinadu spoke on the topic "Revolutionizing Budding Accountants to Chief Financial Officers"
"Unleashing Skills and opportunities in the Horizon Background" said students can find their paths through developing business acumen,mastering their core competencies, optimizing soft skills, combining multiple skill sets, being technologically savvy, networking &mentorship,continuous learning and certification and mapping their career paths adding that the steps to leadership include being resilient,having patience and having fun while going through their journey.
The Founder and Senior Software Engineer, Harmonics Technology, Mr Adelowo Ajibola, the third speaker, spoke on the topic " Accounting in the Digital Age", a brief introduction to how accounting practice have adapted to utilize modern digital tools and software.
After the lectures, the interversity quiz commenced which consisted of students from Lagos State University, University of Lagos, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Obafemi Awolowo University, Anchor University and Yaba College of Technology.
At the end of the quiz which consisted of five rounds, the results were:
UNILAG- 97%
LASU-83%
OAU-63%
Anchor University-57%
OOU-38%
YABATECH-23%
This making UNILAG the winner.
The invited speakers were Mrs Oyindamola Akanbi, Mr Adelowo Ajibola(he has 16 years experience in the field), Mr Richard Okunola, Professor Khadijat Idowu, Mr Abassi Akpan, Mrs Agbeke Ogunleye(she has 15 years experience in the field), Mr Mijinyawa MIJINYAWA, Miss Perpetual Badejo and Mrs Chinyere Akunna.
