National Assembly Has Transmitted Electoral Act 2021 To President Buhari ― Senator Omoworare

National Assembly Has Transmitted Electoral Act 2021 To President Buhari ― Senator Omoworare

The leadership of the National Assembly has transmitted the Electoral Act 2021 to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senior Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly (Senate), Senator Babajide Omoworare, made the disclosure in a statement on Friday night.

The one-paragraph statement read in part: “Please be informed that in pursuance of Section 58 (3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Acts Authentication Act Cap. A2 LFN 2004, the National Assembly has transmitted the Electoral Bill 2021 to Mr. President today Friday, November 19, 2021.”

With the development, the Electoral Bill 2021 awaits the assent of President Buhari to effectively become an Act of Parliament ahead of the next general elections in 2023.

Investigation revealed that the resolution of both chambers of the National Assembly, mandating political parties to pick their candidates for general elections through direct primary option has pitched the lawmakers against the governors smarting for retention of direct, indirect, and consensus options for the emergence of candidates at elections.

A meeting held last week at the Presidential Villa between the leadership of the National Assembly and the governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the instance of Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo ended in a deadlock as the federal lawmakers insisted that direct primary was the best option for the country.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami SAN had however assured Nigerians that President Buhari’s position on the Electoral Act, particularly the contentious mode of primary would be guided by national interest.
